Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of broken wheat or barley
  • 1 cup of boneless meat (chicken, lamb, or beef)
  • 1 cup of mixed lentils (Chana dal, moong dal, and masoor dal)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon of ginger paste
  • 1 tablespoon of garlic paste
  • 1 tablespoon of red chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon of coriander powder
  • 1 tablespoon of cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 4-5 cups of water
  • Oil or ghee for cooking
  • Chopped coriander leaves for garnishing
  • Sliced lemons for serving

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the broken wheat and lentils in water and soak them in separate bowls for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  2. In a pressure cooker or heavy-bottomed pot, heat the oil or ghee and fry the onions until they turn golden brown.
  3. Add the meat and fry for a few minutes until it changes color.
  4. Add the ginger and garlic paste, chopped tomatoes, and all the spices. Mix well and cook for 2–3 minutes.
  5. Drain the soaked lentils and add them to the pot along with the broken wheat. Mix well.
  6. Add 4-5 cups of water, cover the pot, and cook on low heat for 2-3 hours, or until the meat is tender and the lentils and wheat have blended into a thick porridge-like consistency.
  7. Use a hand blender or mash the halwa with a ladle until it reaches a smooth consistency. Add more water if it's too thick.
  8. Adjust the salt and spices to taste.
  9. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with sliced lemons.
  10. Enjoy your delicious homemade Haleem!
